A lack of godly, self-denying love for the other

Amos 2:7 (NEG79)

7 Ils aspirent à voir la poussière de la terre sur la tête des misérables, Et ils violent le droit des malheureux. Le fils et le père vont vers la même fille, Afin de profaner mon saint nom.

A man and his father both had sex with the same girl. The NIV translates, “Father and son use the same girl.” They both just use the girl for their own sexual gratification, making her a victim. But does that reflect our God?! Does that reflect the depth of love between the persons of the Trinity? Does that reflect the profound relationship between Christ and his church? Does that reflect true self-sacrificing love? Each time again the answer is very clear. God accuses his people here of a very crass sin. We might not be so crass, but can we claim freedom from the roots of this crassness?

What are the roots of this crassness? A lack of self-denying love for the other person. Selfishness. A lack of appreciation for how our sexual living is also designed to be reflective living. A lack of appreciation for that profound relationship between Christ and his church—something that has largely served to our benefit. A lack of appreciation for that depth of love between the persons of the Trinity!
