Commentary on 1 Corinthians 15:34 (Summary)

1 Corinthiens 15:34 (NEG79)

34 Revenez à vous-mêmes, comme il est convenable, et ne péchez point; car quelques-uns ne connaissent pas Dieu, je le dis à votre honte.

With regard to matters of life and death the Corinthians are like drunken people, unable to see things clearly. They are guilty of sinning—by which is primarily meant the sin of disbelief in God’s promises. This sin puts them in grave spiritual danger, which is why Paul gives them a strong warning: Wake up…and do not go on sinning. Those who obey his warning can be comforted, knowing that they are doing what is right (or righteous).

Those who do not believe God’s promise of a future resurrection can be said to have no knowledge of God. This is a serious matter, the seriousness of which is confirmed by Paul’s statement, I say this to your shame. In biblical times the preservation of honour and the avoidance of shame were seen as of the greatest importance. Earlier, when Paul warned the Corinthians against arrogance, he assured them, I do not write these things to make you ashamed (1 Corinthians 4:14).
