In this verse Jesus commands his disciples not to escape suffering for the sake of his name, but to take it upon yourself, and specifically with an attitude that astonishes your opponents. The expression “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church” is well-known in the early Christian church, and its truth is always apparent where Christians are persecuted for their faith. The turning of the other cheek and the giving of the undergarment is Jesus’ command to answer enmity on the part of man with kindness, for this is the nature of the kingdom of Jesus. After all, if you belong to this kingdom you know that your hostility (sinfulness) has also been overcome by the goodness of God! Impressed by that grace, you ought to respond to aggression with heavenly love.
