Exodus 1 is structured around the three attacks of Pharaoh on the people of Israel, as follows:

  • Exodus 1:1–7 –  Setting and introduction

  • Exodus 1:8–14 – First attack of Pharaoh: slavery

  • Exodus 1:15–21 – Second attack of Pharaoh: the midwives to kill the baby boys

  • Exodus 1:22 – Third attack of Pharaoh: baby boys to be thrown into the Nile
