Commentary on Habakkuk 1:16 (Summary)

Habacuc 1:16 (NEG79)

16 C'est pourquoi il sacrifie à son filet, Il offre de l'encens à ses rets; Car par eux sa portion est grasse, Et sa nourriture succulente.

Habakkuk's Analysis of the Babylonians’ Lifestyle

The word therefore referred to the Babylonian victory over the Israelites as described in Habakkuk 1:15. By catching the Israelites the Babylonians plundered God’s people and deprived them of their belongings. This enriched them, which enabled them to live in luxury and enjoy eating the finest of foods. But it impoverished the Israelites. The Babylonians’ success led them to offer a sacrifice to their net and dragnet. These tools of destruction that made them rich were turned into gods as objects of their worship.
