Commentary on Proverbs 17:18 (Summary)

Proverbes 17:18 (NEG79)

18 L'homme dépourvu de sens prend des engagements,Il cautionne son prochain.

The counsel against becoming surety for another (cf. Proverbs 6:1–5) is not based on heartless, economic greed, but is rather based on a wise and responsible stewardship. It recognizes that in many respects, including economic, each one should bear his own load (Galatians 6:5). Promoting individual responsibility is not inconsistent with charitable generosity. We are not here forbidden to give to others, but rather we are told to avoid getting a share in their debt. If one chooses to get into debt, he should be prepared to do it alone and face the possible consequences of his failure to repay. Therefore this advice encourages wise and responsible attitudes all around.
