Among the Corinthians there are those who come to the fellowship meals purely (or at least primarily) for the sake of eating and drinking. When eating and drinking the bread and wine, they do not think of Christ’s sacrifice (the body
). Neither do they have any concern for their poorer brothers and sisters (who, after all, are Christ’s body on earth!).
In the end, these church members do not benefit from the meal in any way (see 1 Corinthians 11:17–20). On the contrary, they eat and drink judgment on themselves.
