Paul has just stated that the history of Israel was written down to serve as an example for New Testament believers (believers who live in the end of the ages
). The implication of this statement is clear. New Testament believers are not better than God’s people of old. All God’s people are faced with the same temptations. Christ’s followers should not be proud but rather watchful (see also Mark 13:24–27).
