Paul echoes Jesus’ warnings against both divorce and remarriage after divorce (see Matthew 5:32; Luke 16:18). Two things are of interest in this verse. First, although Paul addresses both husbands and wives, he focuses his attention on the wives. This suggests that one or more women in the Corinthian church were taking steps to divorce their husbands.
Second, Paul does not command divorced believers to reconcile. He only holds it forth as an option. This implies that there are cases where reconciliation is either impossible or undesirable.
