The place of Abraham in Hebrews 11

Hebrews 11:1-40 mentions examples of faith from the Old Testament to encourage and motivate Jewish people who were converted to Christ (the Hebrews) to endure in faith. It is therefor understandable that the author includes a long passage about Abraham in this chapter (Hebrews 11:8–19). The verses Hebrews 11:8–16 describes the faith of Abraham (and Sarah) as standing on the promises of God. Hebrews 11:17–19 describe God’s testing of Abraham’s faith and how he obeyed the Lord through faith.1
