Joseph was used by God to save his people from famine (as Joseph professed in Genesis 45:5–7 and Genesis 50:20). God saved his people so that his Son could be born from the people of Israel. So, it is important to know the story of Joseph (see Psalm 105:16–25 and Acts 7:9–16). But that is not mentioned here in Hebrews 11:1–40. The writer has another purpose for mentioning Joseph here. He is a model of faith. Hebrews 11:22 is about Joseph’s deathbed. The text says that Joseph ended his life in hope. That makes him an example of faith. He knew that death was near, and he expressed his hope in God’s ongoing work.
22 C'est par la foi que Joseph mourant fit mention de la sortie des fils d'Israël, et qu'il donna des ordres au sujet de ses os.
