The chapter begins and ends with references to a mighty angel carrying a little scroll (Revelation 10:1–3) which John ends up eating (Revelation 10:9–11). Between these two bookends there is a second figure represented by the “voice” of Revelation 10:4 and Revelation 10:8. This second figure gives John personal instructions in Revelation 10:4 and Revelation 10:8. Again, between the two instructions John receives from this voice is a particular action performed by the mighty angel with the scroll (Revelation 10:5–7). These concentric circles serve to direct our attention to the circle’s centre, namely, the oath the mighty angel swore in Revelation 10:6–7.
