When would a trumpet sound in the city?

Amos 3:6 (ESV)

6 Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city, unless the LORD has done it?

A trumpet blown in a city would be similar to a fire alarm today. It was a loud sound that clearly warned people that something was happening; there is danger.
