Paul wants to teach them the Word of God. How do we know that? Because he sent a letter to them with the teaching of the Word of God. This whole letter is the ministry of the Word, and Paul’s first desire is to go back and minister to them with the Word of God. Now it is obvious, therefore, that Christians today also need instruction from the Bible so that we have a sound grasp of biblical doctrines. And this therefore applies to every one of us today. We are, for instance, to study our Bibles daily—not merely as almost a superstitious ritual, we just kind of do it and the Word just kind of brushes past us. No, we study it so that we understand the doctrines taught in it. We are to grow in a sound knowledge of what the Bible teaches, a systematic understanding of biblical doctrine. My friends, doctrine is not just for pastors and elders and people who are working full time in ministry. Not everybody is a scholar. Not everybody has scholarly gifts. You do not have to have them. And we are not trying to say that every one of you is a theologian, though you are called to be a theologian. And if you do not understand what the Bible says, you are going to suffer.1
