The Pharisees want to bring Jesus before judges, and have him killed (Matthew 12:2, Matthew 12:10, Matthew 12:14). Jesus, however, turns the tables, saying that their own sons will judge them, who will accuse them, saying, as it were, Surely you knew that demons can only be cast out by Yahweh’s power, so why did you not acknowledge God when he worked with far greater power in Jesus?
In this way the Pharisees show how they are both illogical (Matthew 12:25–26) and inconsistent.
In their plotting, the Pharisees are scheming to bring Jesus before judges and ultimately to kill him (see Matthew 12:2,Matthew 12:10, Matthew 12:14). Jesus, however, turns the tables, saying that the judgment will not fall on him, but on them. And the ones who will judge them are none other than their own sons. These sons will rise up to accuse them, saying, as it were, Surely you knew that demons can only be cast out by the power of Yahweh. Why then did you not acknowledge the Lord when he worked with far greater power in Jesus?
In this way the Pharisees expose themselves as being both unreasonable (Matthew 12:25–26) and inconsistent (Matthew 12:27).1
