The impact of the Lord’s judgment on Babylon is described with language that is familiar in Jeremiah. Babylon will be turned into a desolate place where wild animals roam free. It will no longer be a supreme example of human excellence and endeavor but will instead not be a fit place for people to live. So extreme is the judgment that it is compared to what the Lord did to Sodom and Gomorrah, places which represent the pinnacle of human wickedness.
