Those who heard Jesus' words were utterly devastated and cried out in fear, Who then can be saved?
They acutely sensed that this was impossible for both rich and poor.
Remarkably, the people here were not talking about the kingdom of God, but about being saved. They apparently realized that entering the kingdom of God was all about being saved. But oh, that was no longer possible for them. A terrible thought! Yet, they approach Jesus with their fearful question. They did not walk away like that rich, high-ranking ruler.
