Jesus knows exactly what terrible things are going to happen to him very soon. The high priests and the scribes will hand him over to the Gentile Romans; mockery, mistreatment, and contempt will become his lot (see Mark 14:65; Mark 15:19). They will scourge him and then they will put him to death. Yet that is not the final end for him, for after three days he will rise from the grave!
Jesus knows that all this was foretold by the prophets centuries in advance. It is also described in detail for us in Isaiah 52:13–53:12. The Jewish leaders, and also his disciples (see verse 34), did not realize this at the time. The fulfillment of these words was only recognized later on by the Jews and also by other people. Rabbi Jonathan Bernis, a Jew who confesses the Messiah, recently wrote this about Isaiah 52:14: “Here we have a picture of the Messiah on the cross, following his judgment, the beating, ridiculing, and plucking out of His beard. He endured greater physical torment than any of us can imagine. The accuracy and the detail of Isaiah 53:1–12 are astounding to me. And the gospels go to equally detailed length to show that Isaiah 53:1–12 is fulfilled. For God to give us these signs in such detail indicates that he wants to reveal his Messiah to those who are willing to look for him with an open heart and mind."1
