Babylon has fallen into the snare of its own arrogance, idolatry and military might. It rose to power and dominated many nations, often with cruelty. In all of this it opposed the Lord.” It did not acknowledge the Lord as the one true creator God. It attributed its power and success to its own gods. But now it would be found and caught
by a military power that was superior to its own. What it had done to others would be done to Babylon.
However, Babylon’s real enemy is the Lord. The Lord has opened his armory and brought out the weapons of his wrath, for the Lord God of hosts has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.
The Lord has at his disposal all the military power on earth and in heaven. He is the Lord God of hosts.
In the past he has used Assyria (Isaiah 8:7–8; Isaiah 10:5). Babylon itself has been the Lord’s hammer (Jeremiah 50:23), but now he will bring another greater army against Babylon to do his work of judgment.
The Lord will not allow even the great power of Babylon to oppose his purposes for his world. Theologically, the Lord’s purposes for mankind were closely linked to his purposes for Israel and no great power could frustrate the divine intention. In order to bring about the release of the exiles, Babylon’s power had to be broken. Jeremiah had the strong assurance that this would happen.
