The words in Jeremiah 48:43–44 are another example of Jeremiah using words from the prophet Isaiah (see Isaiah 24:17–18), but he inserts Moab in place of the earth.
The three Hebrew words pahad
(terror
), pahat
(pit
), and pah
(snare
) all have the same consonants and the play of words builds an image of total, inescapable entrapment.1 There is no escape because it is the Lord himself who is bringing these things upon Moab. This is the year of their punishment declares the Lord.
