Given that the Lord had broken the enemies’ plans, the people’s debilitating discouragement (Nehemiah 4:10) thawed to the degree that they returned to work on their assigned portion of the wall (recall Nehemiah 3:1–32). This return is an expression of confidence in the Lord’s continued protection and/or confidence in Nehemiah’s leadership.
