One of the reasons the Lord’s judgment is coming to Moab is that they have trusted in their works
and their treasures.
They believed that their national achievements and wealth would guarantee their safety. The Hebrew word batah,
translated as trust
is ”virtually a description of a religious attitude towards material possessions”.1 It almost sounds like a form of materialism where material wealth and human achievement have become idols. Certainly, idolatry is in view. Chemosh is the god of the Moabites (see Numbers 21:29). This is a nation that worshipped its god as the source of their wealth and success. But all of this will be exposed. Chemosh shall go into exile with his priests and his officials.
Moab’s entire system of worship and its god will be taken away into exile. Faced with the coming of the Lord, their trust in a false god was totally misplaced and foolish.
