Who is rising like the Nile?

The Lord appears to ask a question that strengthens his taunt of Egypt. Who is this rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge? The Pharoah Neco was imposing his dominance in the Syria-Palestine region, which included Judah. He is compared to the Nile River slowly rising in flood until it eventually breaks its banks and floods the plains.¹ The Lord almost mocks the Pharoah’s ambitions to rise, cover the earth, and destroy cities and their inhabitants. All his bravado and delusions of grandeur will come crashing down as the Lord opposes him through the Babylonians.
