  2. Explication du texte

Who destroys both body and soul in hell?

Matthieu 10:28 (NEG79)

28 Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps et qui ne peuvent tuer l'âme; craignez plutôt celui qui peut faire périr l'âme et le corps dans la géhenne.

En bref

We should not fear being persecuted, but rather stand in awe of God. Fearing God is not like fearing man, but the same verb is apt for both, because it concerns being driven either by fear or by awe. This contrast also shows that the One destroying the body in hell is not Satan but God himself.

We ought to not allow ourselves to be guided by the fear of being persecuted on earth, but only by the awe we have for God in heaven. Fearing God is therefore very different from fearing man. Yet the same verb can be used in both instances precisely because it concerns being driven either by this fear or by this awe. This contrast also clarifies that the One actively destroying the body in hell is not Satan but God himself.1
