The two blind men called Jesus the Son of David
as a humble prayer for mercy, seeing, from the preceding miracles, that he was indeed the expected Messiah (see Mark 10:46–52). Ironically, it is the blind who first see and confess that Jesus is the Messiah, calling him the royal, messianic title of Son of David
(see Matthew 1:1; Matthew 15:22; Matthew 20:30; Matthew 21:9, Matthew 21:15).
When the two blind men heard that Jesus was passing by, they immediately followed him while repeatedly calling out: Have mercy on us, Son of David.
It is interesting to note that they did not ask for justice but for mercy. They did not approach Jesus with demands, but with a humble prayer.1 This is because following the miraculous resurrection of Jairus’ daughter, the blind men immediately realize that Jesus is indeed the expected Messiah (see Mark 10:46–52). This is evident from the fact that they appeal to Jesus, the Son of David’s messianic powers of healing for their deliverance. It seems as though the miracle of raising the dead to life has made such a deep impression on these two men who, for lack of sight, were not distracted by the external circumstances surrounding this sensational event. It is therefore ironically the blind men who are first among the crowd to realize that Jesus is the Messiah, immediately proceeding to follow him with this beseeching confession.2 They call him the Son of David,
a royal title reserved for the Messiah (see Matthew 1:1; Matthew 15:22; Matthew 20:30; Matthew 21:9, Matthew 21:15).3
