Why did the Jews so greatly despise tax collectors?

Matthieu 9:10 (NEG79)

10 Comme Jésus était à table dans la maison, voici, beaucoup de publicains et de gens de mauvaise vie vinrent se mettre à table avec lui et avec ses disciples.

En bref

Jews despised tax collectors for working for the occupying Romans. They were also often dishonest, collecting more than was their duty and keeping the extra for themselves (Luke 3:13; Luke 19:8).

The task of the tax collectors was to collect tax money for the occupying Roman authorities which is why they were so greatly hated by the people. On top of this they were often dishonest, collecting more than they had a mandate for and putting the extra money in their own pocket (Luke 3:13; Luke 19:8). They were so greatly despised that the Jews did not even acknowledge their offerings as alms and on top of this their testimonies were not even accepted by the Jewish courts.1
