On top of this they were often dishonest, collecting more than they had a mandate for and putting the extra money in their own pocket (Luke 3:13; Luke 19:8). They were so greatly despised that the Jews did not even acknowledge their offerings as alms and on top of this their testimonies were not even accepted by the Jewish courts.1
