Jesus sailed across the Sea of Galilee when he saw the crowds because he wanted to avoid the crowds, probably because they cared more about his miracles than his preaching. Jesus also had work to do on the other side of the Sea of Galilee, so he told his disciples to bring him there by boat.
Jesus tries to avoid the crowds. This was probably due to the fact that the crowds in this area were generally more interested in seeing his miracles than hearing his preaching. Moreover, Jesus also had a task to fulfill on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. As such he commands his disciples, who apparently already had a boat ready, to sail across to the other side.1
