Satan’s temptation to Jesus to throw himself from the temple (Matthew 4:6) appeals to Psalm 91:11–12’s confession of trust in God, which Jesus later finds vindicated by angelic help (Matthew 4:11) after he has resisted the temptation to test God.
In Matthew 4:6 the devil tries to abuse Jesus’ faithful trust in God for his own ends. Satan therefore appeals to the promises made in Psalm 91:11–12 to believers who dwell in the shelter of the Most High. It was Jesus’ appeal to Scripture which led the devil to challenge him to demonstrate that trust immediately. His temptation consists of appealing to this promise of the angels who will come running to bear him up and protect him from death in the ravine. God’s purpose in this temptation later becomes evident when the promise of Psalm 91:1–16 is indeed fulfilled when angels descend to serve him (Matthew 4:11).1
