While Jesus is perfectly willing to go into the wilderness to be tempted, the Spirit guides him to exactly where Jesus needs to be to conquer the devil and follow the commands of his Father.
Jesus was led up by the Spirit.” God willed that he be tempted, in part to test him, but especially so that he can be revealed as the Conqueror of the devil. This served as a prelude to his great victory over Satan, which he would accomplish on the cross.1
The Spirit of God, which had just descended upon Jesus with his baptism, purposefully led the Mediator on this path of loneliness so that he, out of sight of the people and before the face of God alone, would conduct an important part of his work. Jesus is being led by the Holy Spirit, despite the fact that he is of himself more than willing to go to the wilderness to affirm his baptism through his temptation. When David is anointed, he defeats not only the bear and the lion, but Goliath. When the Mediator is anointed, he conquers evil (John 3:34).2
