After the death of Herod, his kingdom was divided among his three sons Archelaus, Antipas, and Phillip. Although Joseph, for whatever reason, had the desire to go to Judea, he was particularly cautious of Herod’s son Archelaus, who now reigned as ethnarch over Judea, Idumea, and Samaria. This was because Archelaus was known for his desire to follow in the footsteps of his father, since he wanted to be known as a truly legitimate successor of Herod. He even started his reign by plundering the temple, where he orchestrated a bloodbath among rebellious Jews.1
