Jesus’ family’s flight to Egypt fulfills Hosea 11:1, and Christ’s stay there fulfills Isaiah 19:18–20.
In Matthew 2:15, the evangelist adds further clarification from Scripture. In contradistinction to Matthew 1:22–23, Joseph would not here receive the necessary clarification from the angel. After the directions in the first dream, Joseph must now determine from the Old Testament Scriptures themselves why this particular path has to be the one taken by the Messiah. Perhaps Jesus himself provided this clarification to his parents or his disciples at a later time, and as such Matthew could later record the reference to Hosea 11:1 for us.1 Secondly, it should be noted that the prophecy of Isaiah 19:18–20 is also fulfilled in Christ’s stay in Egypt.2
