Matthew 2:12 tells how God warned the wise men in a dream not to return to Herod, and how their worship of Christ led these pagan men to obey the God of Israel, to protect the newborn king.
In Matthew 2:12, we read how God ensured that the Magi, who were allowed to bring the news of the birth to Jerusalem, do not unintentionally become complicit in the attempted murder of the divine Child. They return to their own country by another route and not via the capital city. God instructed them to do this in a dream. Their homage to the newborn king now also leads them to obey the God who brought them here, the God of Israel.1 Here we see again how God intervened with a dream. As part of his redemptive work in Christ, God even reveals his will to pagan wise men, and makes them willing to obey him. Quietly they return to their country, never to be heard from again.2
