Commentary on 1 Kings 15:7–8 (Summary)

1 Rois 15:7–8 (NEG79)

7 Le reste des actions d'Abijam, et tout ce qu'il a fait, cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre des Chroniques des rois de Juda? Il y eut guerre entre Abijam et Jéroboam.

1 Kings 15:7 and 1 Kings 15:8 are in the formalized style we have seen regarding other kings as the writer finishes his treatment of their stories. He gives a source where further information about Abijam may be found; in this case, the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah.

The writer further tells us of Abijam’s death, using the phrase slept with his fathers. Again, this does not indicate a judgment one way or another as to the final state of the dead king.

The writer also indicates that Abijam was buried in the city of David, which is a designation of a portion of Jerusalem. In the context of this portion of 1 Kings it is important, since we have seen the prophecy concerning Jeroboam’s descendants that they would not be buried in that honourable manner. Lastly, the writer says that Abijam was succeeded by his son. The son’s name was Asa.
