1 Kings 14 begins with the notice of an illness that struck Jeroboam's son Abijah. There is an irony that none of the commentators I have consulted mention. That irony is in the name of this individual, for Abijah means my Father is Yah,
and Yah is an abbreviated form of Yahweh. We may ask why such a faithless man would give his son such a faithful-sounding name.
From the verses that follow we can infer that the sickness was serious. It was either obviously life-threatening or serious enough for Jeroboam to wonder whether Abijah would recover or not.
