The symbol of the cup
is a frequent occurrence pointing to symbol God's judgment (see Numbers 5:11–31; Job 21:20; Psalm 75:7–8; Isaiah 51:17, Isaiah 51:22; Jeremiah 25:15–29; Jeremiah 49:12; Ezekiel 23:31–34; Obadiah 1:16; Habakkuk 2:16; Zechariah 12:2; Matthew 26:39).1 In reference to Jerusalem’s fall, it is especially mentioned by Jeremiah (see Jeremiah 13:12–14; Jeremiah 25:15–38; Jeremiah 48:26–28). The content is also a symbolic toxin that makes the drinker pass out of consciousness. While Jerusalem’s judgment is nearing its end, this verse refers to Edom, which will pass out, and whose sin will be uncovered like a drunk person being stripped naked. All of this is a symbol of God’s judgment that will pass from Jerusalem to Edom for their sins.2
