What was the sin and punishment of Sodom?

Lamentations 4:6 (NEG79)

6 Le châtiment de la fille de mon peuple est plus grand Que celui de Sodome, Détruite en un instant, Sans que personne ait porté la main sur elle.

Sodom has become a proverbial name for wickedness (see Genesis 18:1–19:38; Deuteronomy 29:22–28; Isaiah 3:9;Isaiah 13:19; Jeremiah 23:14; Ezekiel 16:46–56; Matthew 10:15; Hebrews 10:31).1 Their sin is described as depraved and perverse (see also Isaiah 1:9–10; Jeremiah 2:10–11; Jeremiah 49:18; Jeremiah 50:40; Amos 4:11; Zephaniah 2:9; Romans 1:18–32), which resulted in their destruction by sulphur and fire.2 Apart from these verses, the following verses in Scripture also indicate the sin and destruction of Sodom as an example of an horrific fate: Deuteronomy 32:32; Matthew 11:23–24; Luke 10:12;Luke 10:17–29; 2 Peter 2:6, Jude 1:7; Revelation 11:8.3 Although the sin of Sodom is identified in Scripture, this particular passage is not concerned with the nature of Sodom’s sin; it concerns the manner of Sodom’s punishment. Here, Jerusalem is not accused of sexual perversion as much as she is accused of a broader covenantal infidelity.4
