What is “it” that is laid on the man?

Lamentations 3:27–28 (NEG79)

27 Il est bon pour l'homme De porter le joug dans sa jeunesse.

It refers to a yoke (Lamentations 3:27). If God puts a yoke on a man, let him bear it in quiet solitude; this is meant in contrast to those who seek to forget their sorrows by turbulent distraction, or who murmur and rebel against God's doings.1 After all, it is God’s doing. By divine imposition, the burden and suffering were laid upon him like a yoke is laid on an animal. What is to be noted is that this yoke was the infliction of punishment in accordance with God’s sovereign will. In this case it refers to, and reflects, the corporate verdict over the whole nation.2
