1. Lamentations 2:4 (NEG79)
  2. Explication du texte

What is the significance of God’s “right hand” as the hand of an archer?

Lamentations 2:4 (NEG79)

4 Il a tendu son arc comme un ennemi; Sa droite s'est dressée comme celle d'un assaillant; Il a fait périr tout ce qui plaisait aux regards; Il a répandu sa fureur comme un feu sur la tente de la fille de Sion.

The depiction of God as an archer against Jerusalem is expanded.1 The right hand of the Lord is usually the means by which he saves and protects his people (see Psalm 98:1). In Lamentations 2:3 his right hand is withdrawn from them, leaving them vulnerable to the attack of the enemy. The same right hand is now used to strike Jerusalem (Lamentations 2:4). He has become like an enemy to them (see also Lamentations 2:5).

In other words: there are changing roles conveyed by the symbolism of God’s right hand towards his people. In times past, it was to protect them and strike their enemies, but then he withdrew it (Lamentations 2:3). Eventually, God's right hand was used to strike them.
