The people respond to Jeremiah by making a very dramatic pledge. May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the Lord your God sends you to us.
They claim that they are accountable to the Lord if they do not listen to him. They promise to do what the Lord says, whether it is good or bad.
This passionate commitment to obey the Lord only makes what follows even more damning.
