Zedekiah sends two representatives to Jeremiah to Please pray to the Lord for us.
This is not the first or the last time Jeremiah seeks council from the prophet (see Jeremiah 21:1–2; Jeremiah 38:14). Zedekiah always seems to pay secret
attention to what Jeremiah says, but he never has the courage to act on the prophet’s words.1 On this occasion he requests that Jeremiah pray for the nation. The information in Jeremiah 37:5 suggests that he is probably asking Jeremiah to pray that the Babylonians do not return to lay siege to Jerusalem again. There is, however, no indication from Zedekiah or those he sent of any willingness to repent. "They have the political and military insight to recognize that the circumstances of the city are desperate, but still, they lack spiritual perception to see how inadequate and demeaning their attitude is towards the Lord."2
