Micaiah the son of Gemariah is present when the scroll is read. When he hears what the scroll said he goes to the palace, to the secretary’s chamber, and reports what he has heard to all the officials who are gathered there. The secretary is Elishama and four of the officials present are identified: Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah. Gemariah appears to have sensed the urgency of the scrolls message as well and has already made his way to the secretary’s chambers. Elnathan’s father was also involved in the discovery of the scroll during Josiah’s reign (2 Kings 22:12). It would seem therefore that some of the officials in Jehoiakim’s court sensed the importance of Jeremiah’s message and were sympathetic towards the Lord’s prophet.
