As in Jeremiah 23:5–6, this new king will be a righteous king who will execute justice and righteousness in the land.
He will be the kind of king that the Lord always intended Israel to have and that David initially showed signs of being but ultimately fell short of. He will lead the Lord’s people in a way that brings justice and righteousness among them. His rule will bring about the salvation of the people of Judah, and the security of the city Jerusalem. The city will then be called, The Lord is our righteousness.
The city, and its people, take on the character of the king1.
