When will the Lord “sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast”?
The next oracle (Jeremiah 31:27–30) begins with a promise that the Lord will reverse the judgments of exile. It should be noted that this promise is made to both the house of Israel
and the house of Judah,
once again confirming that restoration is for the whole nation.
The Lord’s promise is that he will sow the house of Israel and Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.
He will restore the land that has been emptied of both people and livestock by the Assyrian and Babylonian invasion. Referring to the sowing of seed
also reminds the reader of the promise the Lord had made to the patriarchs that their descendants would fill the land (Genesis 12:7; Genesis 13:16; Genesis 22:17;Genesis 28:14;Genesis 35:12). The restoration would therefore reach far beyond just those returning from exile. Sowing the seed of beast also means that the land will provide all that the people need1.
27 Voici, les jours viennent, dit l'Eternel, Où j'ensemencerai la maison d'Israël et la maison de Juda D'une semence d'hommes et d'une semence de bêtes.
