1. Jérémie 30:16 (NEG79)
  2. Explication du texte

In what way will all who devour Jacob be devoured?

In the book of Jeremiah 1:1–52:34, the word therefore normally means that a message of judgment is going to follow because of Judah’s unfaithfulness. But in this case (Jeremiah 30:16) it is introducing something very different. It is the Lord who has acted against Judah through their enemies (Jeremiah 30:14b, Jeremiah 30:15c), but now all who devour you shall be devoured. The Lord is now going to destroy those he used to destroy Judah. The Lord used their enemies to discipline his people, but now he will judge the case of Judah’s wound (Jeremiah 30:13), and he will rightly punish those enemies for their cruelty and wickedness when they made the Lord’s people their prey and devoured them1. Dealing with their enemy is part of how the Lord will heal the wound of his people. This promise also means that the final fate of the Lord’s people is not determined by their sin or their ability to be faithful, but rather by the Lord’s willingness to show grace and mercy towards them2.
