It is to be noted that the established leadership in Jerusalem set the example in obedient response. Eliashib the high priest was the first to step forward, together with his brothers the priests
(Nehemiah 3:1). Other men of note also did not hesitate to get involved (Nehemiah 3:9, Nehemiah 3:12). One of the biggest challenges Jesus faced in his ministry was the refusal of the established Jewish leadership to get on board with his work (Matthew 12:24; Matthew 26:47). It remains necessary in our day too that recognized (church) leadership set the example in initiating appropriate action in changing circumstances as well as illustrating continued interest and effort in what needs to happen in God’s kingdom.
