Commentary on Deuteronomy 6:24 (Summary)

The parent here returns to the child's question about the meaning of all of God's laws (Deuteronomy 6:20). What is its purpose, and what does it accomplish? In the parent's response to the child, the word fear appears again. It is crucial for everyone, old and young, to live with reverence for the Lord. This fundamental attitude of man toward his God is demonstrated by his obedience to God's commands. In this way he demonstrates his love for God. He has a great desire to live according to God's will. In Psalm 119:1–176, not without reason the longest in the book of Psalms, this is expressed repeatedly. For example, in Psalm 119:16: I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word (see also Psalm 119:47–48; Psalm 119:173–174). Those who show such reverence for God will prosper, and the Lord will spare their lives.
