What does it mean for grace to reign through righteousness?

Romans (Romains) 5:21 (ESV)

21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

En bref

That grace reigns through righteousness means that

  1. grace reigns over believers because God credits righteousness to them; or

  2. by God’s grace, believers live holy lives.

Likely, Paul has in mind credited righteousness. That is, when we put our faith in Christ, we are credited with his righteousness. Thus, grace reigns through righteousness in the sense that grace reigns through the fact that when we put our faith in Christ, we are credited with his righteousness. And this leads to eternal life. We can detect this is likely Paul’s meaning because credited righteousness is a theme he has already covered in the letter (Romans 3:21–26; Romans 4:9–12). Further, he says that this righteousness leads to eternal life. Since even believers continue to sin in this life, that this righteousness leads to eternal life suggests that it is credited.

Some contend that the righteousness Paul has in mind is actual holy living. Paul is saying that grace abounds through actual holy living that leads to eternal life. The notion is that, since Paul portrays grace as a power that reigns, that power must have a practical effect. Further, Paul states in Romans 6:4 that believers walk in newness of life, which suggests that practical holy living takes place in this life.

There is some truth in this view, because God’s grace does abound by empowering believers to begin living actual holy lives. Still, it is difficult to accept that Paul would say living a holy life leads to eternal life, because we know that we will never be perfect until we are recreated at the resurrection. So how could our holy living lead to eternal life? Further, Paul has emphasized that justification is by faith, so it would be strange for him to now suggest it is connected with grace empowered works.

Thus, while both views are commendable, and grace does empower holy living, Paul likely has in mind the righteousness that is credited by Christ. So grace abounds by crediting Christ’s righteousness to us, which leads to eternal life.

Interpretation 1:
Paul means that grace reigns over believers because God credits righteousness to them.

Summary:

Sin leads to physical and spiritual death, but in his grace, God overcomes death by crediting righteousness to those who have faith in Jesus Christ. And since believers have credited righteousness by the grace of God, they have eternal life.

Although sin naturally controls us, because of the work of Jesus Christ, God’s grace seizes dominion by giving us Christ’s righteousness. That we are given Christ’s righteousness as a gift of grace should cause us to abound with joy and thankfulness.

Minor differences:

Our authors seem to agree that grace reigning through righteousness has to do with God crediting righteousness to believers. Still, only Leon Morris makes this point explicitly.

For Morris, Paul is explaining that grace triumphs when God credits righteousness to believers, through which they gain eternal life.1 Thus, grace reigning through righteousness has to do with God graciously crediting righteousness to believers.

On the other hand, Douglas Moo and Frank Thielman seem to imply that Paul has credited righteousness in mind, without stating it directly. For example, Moo says that for grace to reign through righteousness is for believers to be transferred to the domain of righteousness.2 To be transferred to the domain of righteousness seems to imply credited righteousness. Likewise, Thielman contends that righteousness refers to the release of sinners from the punishment of God’s wrath that they deserve.3 And being released from the punishment of God’s wrath implies credited righteousness.

Interpretation 2:
Paul means that by God’s grace, believers live holy lives.

Summary:

God’s grace is like a power that reigns over believers’ lives. And when grace reigns over believers’ lives it produces holiness in them so that they literally begin living a righteous life.
