Why will kings and princes sit on the throne of David, and people inhabit the city forever, if they observe the Sabbath?
The clause But if you listen to me,
is typically used to introduce covenant blessings. The focus is the Sabbath, but Jeremiah is calling Judah to observe the whole covenant. To break part of the covenant is to break it all.1 The blessings of being faithful to the covenant are described here as the throne of David being established forever (2 Samuel 7:1–29) and the city inhabited forever (see Zechariah 2:2–12; Zechariah 8:3,Zechariah 8:15; Zechariah 14:11). These were both vital aspects of the Lord’s covenant promise to protect and establish Israel forever.2
23 Ils n'ont pas écouté, ils n'ont pas prêté l'oreille; Ils ont raidi leur cou, Pour ne point écouter et ne point recevoir instruction.
