Who is the blessed man who trusts in the Lord?

The contrast of the blessed man in Jeremiah 17:7–8 to the cursed man in Jeremiah 17:5–6 is implied by the absence of a conjunction such as but at the start of Jeremiah 17:7.¹ The blessed man is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. The Hebrew word used here for blessed is baruk which stresses the fact that the blessings come from the Lord. And the Hebrew word batah, translated as trusts is the word for the life of faith. The Lord himself is his trust.² This personal trust in the Lord himself, in his character and power, is the total opposite of the man who trusts in humanity. As the Lord’s covenant people, Judah should have been like the blessed man by trusting in the Lord instead of trusting in foreign nations and their gods.
