God’s discipline can take the form of frustration; there is no fulfillment, there is no enjoyment of what you get. There is no blessing. Now you will see that element of frustration often put into many pronouncements of God's judgment and chastisement in the Scriptures. The wise man in Ecclesiastes 6:1–12, said that he had seen a thing like that, a very distressing thing: a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions and honor so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them. Is that not tragic? All gifts come from God. God gives wealth, possessions and honor to a man so that he does not lack anything that he could desire, and yet God withholds one thing from him, namely the power to enjoy those gifts. Isn't that tragic? You see that frustration element that enters in. Now it is that kind of element of which the Lord was speaking: that here, you see, it is not that you have no food. You have food but somehow it does not satisfy, and you have clothing but somehow it does not keep you warm. It is that frustrating element of God’s dealing with you.1
